A tricky two-alarm fire took out of a Smallwood Church Road home in Indian Head late last week, causing devastating damage for the homeowner of a single-family dwelling, according to officials.
The incident was reported shortly after 9:45 p.m. on Thursday, April 6.
On the night of the fire, upwards of 100 firefighters from the 10th District Volunteer Fire Department and nearby agencies were called to the home, where they were met by “a large volume of fire in the roof area.”
While fighting the fire, there was a structural collapse of the roof shortly after first responders arrived, which prompted them to shift to a defensive attack in an effort to contain the flames.
For 14 hours, firefighters were at the scene, as they allowed the flames to burn due to areas of hidden fire that were inaccessible until the following morning.
According to the fire marshal, the fire caused approximately $750,000 ($550,000 to the structure; $200,000 to its contents) in damage, and the house was destroyed by the flames.
The cause and origin of the Charles County fire remains under investigation.
